Domestic Open Adoption

Bringing birth and adoptive families together

Open adoption brings trust and honesty into the adoption equation, rather than secrecy. In open adoption, the control and choices ultimately lay with the birth parents and adoptive parents. The birth family becomes extended family, like any other relative within the adoptive family. Alberta legislation requires that every private adoption be open to the extent that the full names of birth parents and adoptive parents appear on the legal paperwork required.

To us, an open adoption means so much more than names on paper. Our open adoptions involve a degree of contact between the birth family and the adoptive family. This ranges from a phone call after the birthmother has chosen a family to regular visits after placement. Oftentimes birth and adoptive families will have close, loving relationships with regular contact. The benefits of maintaining connection between birth families and adoptive families extend to everyone, especially the child. There are also situations where the birthmother is not ready or able to have an ongoing relationship and this is respected. And as with anything, we are here to answer your questions and support you throughout the entire process.

Open Adoption Success

A Tale of Open Adoption

We have four boys, ages 9 months to 12 years, that came to us through open adoption. They are rambunctious, active, fun, hilarious and completely unique little people. There is not a single doubt in our minds or hearts that these 4 boys and their birth families are meant to be ours.

Waiting Families

Below you can find a few of the excited, loving families like you who are ready to welcome a child into their lives. Check out their pictures, “Dear Birth Parent” letters and relevant background information to see what types of information birth parents are looking for.

Domestic Open Adoption Seminars

The cost for the seminar is $1200.

This two full-day course is currently offered via video conferencing until further notice.

At this course you learn about birthparents and their needs, learn about the legal aspects and the court process, explore your feelings regarding infertility, hear first hand from birthparents and adoptive parents who have open adoptions facilitated through our agency. And you will have many more questions answered regarding open adoption, contact with the birthparents, and talking to your child about his/her adoption.

Government regulations state that pre-adoption counseling covering a number of specified topic areas must be provided before approval. We feel that this is best done in a group setting. This gives you an opportunity to learn how open adoption really works before you take the next steps in the process. It is our policy that ALL applicants attend the seminar.
