Domestic Seminar Adoption Options presents the Pre Adoption Seminar in both Edmonton and Calgary. The seminar prepares participants to become adoptive parents through an open adoption process and is a required piece of our licensed adoption domestic program. The course format includes teaching, large and small group discussion, videos, guest speakers and a manual. Topics covered include: private adoption: the legal picture in Alberta; laws, policies, court process; statistics about placement; roles/responsibilities of all parties. You will learn what open adoption really is; your fears and concerns will be addressed; you will hear a panel of birthparent/adoptive family discuss how it works for them. You will hear about living with adoption: how and when to tell; helping the child to understand; and educating others. The course is held once a month and alternates between Edmonton and Calgary. You are free to choose the seminar most convenient for you. Please call the office to pre-register as space is limited. Times are: Friday from 10 am - 5pm (Light lunch is provided) and Saturday 9 am - 4 pm (Lunch on your own). International Seminar Adoption Options provides the International Adoption Seminar on a monthly basis with our International Specialists in both our Edmonton and Calgary office. In this six hour session our specialist will cover the issues of international adoption—adopting cross-culturally, effects of institutionalization on children, attachment issues, common medical concerns, preparing for your trip and finding the resources you need for your child on your return. She will be able to answer your questions, provide you with a package of materials and match you with a buddy family who has adopted from the same country. Canadian immigrant families who are doing a relative adoption from their country of origin may request an individualized educational session as many of the issues will be different.
