Adoption is a personal decision. And we feel that it's very important for you to understand all of your options. Adoption is a positive choice, but it isn't the right option for everyone.  We can help you learn about your options and explore your feelings around each, because we want you to make a decision that is the best one for you and your child.

Meet with a Staff Member for Choice Counselling
Tell us about your fears. Ask lots of questions. Learn about all your options and the resources available to you. You can explore the options with someone who is caring, compassionate and non-judgmental, and find the one that is right for you and your baby.

This is a personal decision.  If you decide that adoption is the right choice for you, we will work with you to make an adoption plan that is unique to you, your family, your child and your future. If you decide that adoption is not the right option for you, we will help you connect with the appropriate resources to assist you further.

Choose Your Adoptive Family
If you choose to move forward in making an adoption plan, through counseling and support you will explore  the different ways you can be involved in the adoption process. Your social worker will talk with you about the type of family you want for your child.  You will then be provided with profiles of approved and waiting adoptive families.  A profile includes a "Dear Birthparent" letter, written by the prospective adopting parents with pictures of themselves and their life. You will also be provided with the applicants homestudy report. This is a detailed description and assessment of the adoptive family, completed by a professional social worker. After you look at these profiles, you can choose the family that you would like to adopt and parent your child.

Match Meeting
In most situations, after you make the choice of family, your social worker will arrange a ‘match meeting’ with the prospective adoptive parents. This is an opportunity to get to know them better, to hear more about their lives, and to ask any questions you might have. Some birthparents choose not to meet the adoptive family and we completely respect this choice. However, we strongly encourage a meeting as this is the best way to really get to know someone.

Create an Adoption Plan
If the match meeting is successful (and they usually are), Adoption Options will help everyone involved to develop an adoption plan. The birthmother is in charge of what she wants and needs during her time in the hospital and in the placement of her child. We work with everyone in the adoption circle to build an adoption plan that respects the birthmother’s wishes. We will help you and the prospective adoptive parents work out a plan for developing a relationship with your child and the adoptive family at a level that everyone is comfortable with: visits, phone calls, photos, letters. It's all open for discussion. You have choices.

Open adoption is based on the philosophy that children benefit from maintaining a connection to their birthfamiies, and we encourage this relationship. However, we respect the right of birthparents to choose the degree of openness that best suits their needs.

"I know now that in an open adoption you do not lose a child but you gain a family."

Ongoing Support

Counselling and support is available to birthparents and their families free of charge for as long as they need it.  Our professional social workers can provide peer connections with experienced birthparents, and support on a one-to-one basis or at regularly scheduled support group meetings as you work through the grieving process and setting goals for the future.

One of our social workers would be happy to speak with you in more detail about the adoption process and what your options are.
